Sheriff Mark Garber has built a lifelong legacy around public service, integrity, and safety. Serving as the 27th Sheriff of Lafayette Parish since 2016, Garber brings to the role a wealth of experience from local, state, federal, and military law enforcement. His leadership has been marked by innovation, community partnership, and a relentless pursuit of justice.

Born and raised in South Louisiana, Sheriff Mark Garber began his law enforcement career with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office. He went on to serve in the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Arlington, Texas Police Department, where he held positions including SWAT team leader, motorcycle officer, and police sniper. His training and tactical experience laid a strong foundation for a career defined by excellence and composure under pressure.

Mark Garber also served as a federal agent with the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations, where he was deployed to Iraq to perform battlefield interrogations. His courage and contribution to national security earned him the prestigious Bronze Star Medal. Later, he joined the U.S. Secret Service, protecting national leaders and working in major metropolitan areas such as New York City.

Back in Louisiana, Mark Garber returned to Lafayette to serve as a felony prosecutor for over six years. He also practiced law privately before being elected Sheriff. Today, his administration focuses on public safety through programs that address both crime and the underlying social issues that lead to it. These include mental health initiatives, youth engagement programs, and rapid-response teams designed for search and rescue operations.

But behind the badge and title, Sheriff Mark Garber shares this mission of public service with his wife, Kristan Garber. Kristan plays an important role as a visible supporter and advocate for the community. Whether attending local events, championing family-focused initiatives, or supporting law enforcement families, Kristan Garber’s presence has helped strengthen the sheriff’s connection to the residents of Lafayette Parish.
